How do I request a certificate, transcript or official academic document?
Raise a ticket through the Academic Help Desk, select the relevant service, explain the purpose and attach the required supporting documents. Use the ticket for follow-up rather than sending parallel requests through multiple channels.
Where should I submit an academic request, complaint or grievance?
Use the Academic Help Desk. The ticketing system records the request, assigns it to the appropriate desk and allows its progress to be tracked. Urgent cases should still have a ticket number.
Where can I find the rules applicable to my programme?
Consult the current Academic Guidelines for regulations and the relevant Courses of Study for curriculum and credit requirements.
How do I change a registered course or report a timetable clash?
Course changes must be completed within the window announced in the Academic Calendar. For a genuine clash or portal problem, raise an Academic Help Desk ticket promptly with the course codes and screenshots where relevant.
Is academic feedback compulsory?
Yes. The Academic Guidelines require students to submit academic feedback within the announced period. Check the current notice and complete it through the designated academic portal.
What should I do if illness affects classes or an examination?
Contact the Institute Medical Unit without delay and follow the medical-leave procedure in the Academic Guidelines. Also raise an Academic Help Desk ticket so that the Academic Office has a time-stamped record of the case.
What should I do if I believe a recorded mark or grade is incorrect?
First contact the course instructor. Any formal correction must follow the grade-change procedure and timeline in the Academic Guidelines. Raise a Help Desk ticket if the correction has been approved but is not reflected in the academic record.
Can the Academic Office endorse an external scholarship application?
Yes, where institutional endorsement is required. The student must initiate the application, satisfy the agency’s eligibility and renewal conditions, and submit the request and documents through the Academic Help Desk in good time.
Where can I find examination dates and instructions?
The broad examination periods are listed in the Academic Calendar. Detailed timetables, room allotments and instructions are issued separately through official notices.

Five-Year BS–MS Dual Degree Programme
IISER Kolkata offers a 5 Year Bachelor of Science and Master of Science (BS-MS) Dual Degree Programme in synchrony with other IISERs. Admission to the BS-MS programme is conducted through a common annual summer selection. IISER Kolkata offers a unique training programme to the selected candidates through a balanced schedule of class room lessons, project and research work.
While the Institute aims to comprehensively train the students in each of the major subjects, much attention is also directed to the development of the interdisciplinary skills. The broad outline of the training programme is as follows:
In the first year, all students are introduced to basic sciences, viz., Biological, Chemical, Mathematical, Physical and Earth Sciences, as well as Computer Programming and Humanities courses. In the second year, the students select three pre-major subjects from the first five disciplines mentioned above. In the third and fourth years, students study a major subject from the three pre-major subjects chosen in the second level and need to take interdisciplinary courses as electives.
The fifth year is almost completely devoted to full time research/technical project/specialized training in which the students need to prepare a dissertation. At the end of the fifth year, both Bachelor and Masters Degrees are awarded to successful students.

BS–MS Dual Degree Programme in Computational and Data Sciences
The BS-MS Dual Degree programme in Computational and Data Sciences is a unique initiative designed to provide students with a strong foundation in computational techniques while ensuring significant exposure to natural sciences. This interdisciplinary program aims to bridge the gap between computational sciences and real-world scientific challenges by integrating rigorous training in computational methodologies with applications in physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences, and mathematics.
With the increasing role of computational methods in scientific research, this program is structured to empower students with skills in programming, data analysis, machine learning, and high-performance computing while maintaining a strong scientific foundation. Graduates from this program will be well-equipped to apply their computational expertise to solve complex problems in the natural sciences, making them highly valuable in both academia and industry.
This curriculum is carefully designed to provide an optimal balance between theoretical knowledge and practical applications. By leveraging a multidisciplinary approach, students will gain a deep understanding of computational principles and their effective application to scientific and engineering problems. The program aspires to train future leaders in computational science with the ability to address challenges in various domains of natural sciences using state-of-the-art computational tools.

Master of Science Programme
Master of Science (MS) programme is a new programme, launched in the Academic year 2022-2023 offering a Master’s degree in a period of 2 years. It will extend an immersive and flexible learning experience to bright undergraduate students selected competitively from across the country. The programme has an increased emphasis on course-work with research experience gained through a project in the second year.
The programme aims to provide young motivated individuals with a rigorous training, desired level of scientific understanding, and a glimpse of global contemporary research at an early stage to enable them to pursue a career in teaching, innovation and scientific research and development.

Integrated PhD Programme
Integrated Doctor of Philosophy (IP) programme at IISER Kolkata is a combination programme which starts with a comprehensive Masters programme (MS) followed by a research programme (PhD). Individual Department selects deserving candidates from the pool of applicants based on their academic backgrounds and their performance in the selection test.

The goal of the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Program at IISER Kolkata is to introduce students to cutting-edge research and to stimulate their intellectual development. The Institute offers PhD Program in the following broad disciplines – Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Computational and Data Sciences, Geological Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences and Space Sciences.
